Turning Reporting Into Useful Decisions

Turning Reporting Into Useful Decisions

Technology projects create the strongest results when decisions are grounded in a clear purpose, practical evidence and an understanding of the people involved. This guide explains the principles Solvix uses to approach the subject.

Start with the decision

A dashboard should exist to support a recurring decision. Ask who will use the information, what action they can take and how quickly they need it. This prevents reports from becoming collections of impressive but unused metrics.

Choose a small set of meaningful measures

Prioritise indicators connected to outcomes, drivers and risks. Include definitions and ownership so teams interpret each metric consistently. More charts do not automatically create more insight.

Add context and comparison

A number becomes useful when compared with a target, previous period, forecast or relevant segment. Highlight material changes and explain known causes so users can focus on exceptions rather than scanning every value.

Design for exploration

Allow users to move from summary to detail without losing context. Filters and drill-downs should answer real questions, while default views should remain simple enough for frequent use.

Connect insight to action

Reports should make responsibility and next steps visible. Alerts, annotations and review routines help teams act on information rather than merely observe it.

Review whether the report changes behaviour

Track usage and discuss which measures influenced decisions. Remove unused content and refine metrics as the business evolves. A report is valuable only when it improves understanding or action.
